How it works

SocialBeats ranks artists from all over the world across 16 style families and 75 sub-styles. Every night, a score out of 1000 compares each artist with the other artists of the same style.

The score out of 1000

Five criteria, each with a fixed weight:

Audience35 %
Fans and followers on Deezer, YouTube, Last.fm, Mixcloud and Twitch
Growth25 %
Audience change over 7 and 30 days
Activity20 %
Releases, videos and collabs over 90 days
Live10 %
Concerts and festivals over 12 months
Community10 %
Fans following the artist on SocialBeats (soon)

For each criterion, the artist gets a percentile rank within the style: 1000 if better than everyone else, 500 if in the middle. The score is the weighted average of these ranks, so a small artist taking off can overtake a big name standing still.

Where the data comes from

  • Deezer: fan counts, discography, labels, top tracks and previews.
  • YouTube: subscribers of the official channel and latest videos.
  • Last.fm: unique listeners, styles (tags) and biographies.
  • Mixcloud and Twitch: DJ followers and published mixes, for scenes where sets matter as much as releases.
  • Spotify: catalogue and new releases.
  • Ticketmaster: announced concerts and festivals.
  • Wikipedia and Wikidata: biography, career start, origin, official channels (CC BY-SA licence).
  • MusicBrainz: country and official links to platforms.

Figures are collected every night and scores recalculated around 05:30 (Brussels time). No artist pays to appear or climb in the charts.

Styles and sub-styles

16 families (techno, hard music, house, rap…) and 75 sub-styles (hard techno, frenchcore, amapiano, drill…). Every sub-style has its own chart; a family chart brings all its sub-styles together.

Levels and XP

Every artist earns XP from releases, shows, festivals and weeks at number one, and levels up. A level once earned is never lost.

FAQ

What is SocialBeats?

SocialBeats is a chart of artists by music style, recalculated every night, with a game layer: levels, XP and badges for artists, and soon for fans.

How is an artist's score calculated?

The score out of 1000 combines audience (35%), growth over 7 and 30 days (25%), activity over 90 days (20%), shows over 12 months (10%) and community (10%). Each criterion is compared with other artists of the same style.

How often do the charts change?

Every night. Platform figures are collected between 02:00 and 04:00, then scores and ranks are recalculated around 05:30 (Brussels time).

Where do the figures come from?

From the public APIs of Deezer, YouTube, Last.fm, Mixcloud, Twitch, Spotify and Ticketmaster, completed by Wikipedia, Wikidata and MusicBrainz for biographies and official links.

Which music styles are covered?

16 families and 75 sub-styles, from frenchcore to amapiano, including hard techno, hardstyle, drill and reggaeton. Every sub-style has its own chart.

How does an artist get into the charts?

Automatically: artists are picked up from the platforms every night and added once they pass 1,000 Deezer fans with an identified style. There is no paid listing.

What are levels for?

They trace an artist's career: from Demo to Icon, each level is earned with releases, shows, festivals and weeks at number one. A level once earned stays earned.
